QuArK and Windows Vista

QuArK saves most of its stuff in the Program Files folder (and so do the compilers). Windows Vista doesn't like that (for a very good reason: programs shouldn't be writing in Program Files, but in AppData), and will automatically 'move' the newly changed files (like Setup.qrk) to a separate folder, the VirtualStore folder. This folder is normally located under your *user*\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\... directory. This should work just fine every time. Just be sure that when you make a backup copy you don't forget this folder. Also, this WILL cause 'trouble' when using multiple users.
Here's a few links with more info:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues/2006/11/UAC/
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5538
By the way, this behaviour of QuArK is not going to change any time soon. Just be sure to take it into account when using Vista. And that goes for all people reading this!

Another thing. The latest versions of QuArK disable Vista's Aero interface when opening an OpenGL window. This also as a very good reason: the way QuArK draws its views right now, is not the right way! The outlines and handles are drawn without the use of OpenGL. This is not supported, and actually forbidden. That's why on Windows XP these outlines sometimes disappear. And on Vista, it would produce white-grey corruption in the view!
This will all be changed some time in the future, but since that requires a total rebuild of the entire drawing-code... It'll not be the near future.

lol, vista isnt all that bad, only problems with quark and vista that ive come across are the above mentioned and the grid-dot disappearing issue when aero is disabled, but that can be worked around by using software for your 3d view renderer as oppsosed to any of the others

Hehehe, trying to start a flame war?
Anyway, I disagree. Vista causes trouble, but that's mostly because of bad drivers and bad applications. Just like Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Windows Vista is as stable as an OS needs to be. Sure, Microsoft had problems with copy-file speeds, but they mostly fixed that in a hotfix and then in SP1.
Basically: whenever Vista is 'acting up', there a 95% chance it's because of a bad driver/program, instead of Vista itself.
And 'Who Gives A Dam' is right: there are only a few small problems with QuArK on Vista, and all of those are QuArK's fault, not Vista's.

I'm not trying to start flame war, it is just my humble point of view.
When I look to vista, it is for me like having XP, with a 3D accelerator vid-card working in addition: nothing new but visuals, and mre RAM consumed... So what would be the use to migrate to Vista when XP is largely enough, and when it costs more RAM ressources (4x + than XP...)..
I guess there are some good reasons why some German consumer organisations asked people to require a vista uninstall and having XP instead when they buy a new PC....
Anyway, it is my personal opinion, and I will definitively not install vista, and rather prefer to move to Linux, or Mac.. I will not go to the dark side of the force....

I just read a very nice statement somewhere on the internet (the GameDev forums, if I remember correctly). They were having a XP-Vista war, and somebody said: "Maybe that just means that each edition updates just enough that every two updates, it becomes substantial."
What (s)he meant was that the jump from XP-Vista is too small for most people to consider updating, but 2000-Vista is large enough. Vista is more stable, MUCH safer, has a better memory manager, supports more things, has DirectX 10, ... But people with Windows XP don't 'gain that much', whilst people upgrading from Windows 2000 will get a lot more of new stuff.
Ah well, whatever. If you don't want to install Vista, no problem! I'm not saying you should; I only am saying that today, there are no "valid" reasons for somebody to "hate" Vista, except for personal reasons that is.
